On Target
While it may seem as though your
employees are just randomly trying to make you upset, keep in mind that the
object of their behavior, regardless of whether or not they know it, is always
to get you off course.
How do you stay on
target?
You learned some techniques
in the seminar: de-triangle yourself, stay calm, don't take it personally...but
it doesn't hurt to do some things to be very intentional about your
focus.
1. Write your goals down. Put
them on a poster-sized sheet and tack it up somewhere you'll see
it.
2. Tell someone else about your
goals, especially someone else who's familiar with 'systems
thinking.'
3. Review your goals
regularly. Adjust them when
necessary.
Remember that only by
knowing where you are going can you expect anyone else to follow you there--if
you can stay on target, chances are you'll get there a lot sooner.
